AUSTIN — State Sen. Dan Patrick called for a review of security policies after a 24-year-old Houston man allegedly fired several shots while standing on the Texas Capitol’s south steps Thursday, apparently moments after visiting the lawmaker’s office.

No one was injured in the shooting, which occurred just after noon.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers tackled the man almost immediately after the shooting.

The DPS identified the man as Fausto Cardenas. Spokeswoman Tela Mange said Cardenas was taken to the Travis County Jail and faces a third-degree felony charge of deadly conduct.

Mange said law enforcement officials did not immediately know “what the suspect said or what may have provoked him to do this.”

Logan Spence, chief of staff for Patrick, said the man, dressed in a white T-shirt, blue jeans and bulky leather jacket came into the Houston Republican’s third-floor office shortly before the shooting and said he wanted to speak to “the girl in the white shirt.”
