In the best of times, the vast blast furnace of the California’s wastelands never made sense to me. And now, as we head into collapse, I can’t begin to imagine what will happen in a place like Victorville as order breaks down. Maybe something between Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead.

Yes, a lot more… In just three years, it’s developed one of the highest unemployment rates in California, a respectably high crime rate, twice the number of parolee residents than any other city in the county, a half-dozen jails and penitentiaries, the worst high school dropout rate in the country and a whole lot of liquor stores.
Oh, and then there are the ghetto birds. They buzz rooftops on an almost daily basis, blaring descriptions for criminals on the loose from a megaphone. If this isn’t the ideal suburban lifestyle, I don’t know what is.
