Cardin, public, spar over health reform

There were boos and heckles that made it tough to hear above the commotion.

But Maryland Democratic U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin managed to answer tough questions about the impending Congressional health care overhaul and its effect on Maryland residents.

Hundreds of protesters both applauding and denouncing the federal health care bills staked their territory on opposites sides of Osler Drive at Towson University. But the signs and voices favoring health reform were scarce inside the packed 500-seat arts auditorium.

Following a five-page PowerPoint presentation outlining the federal health plan, Cardin opened the floor to the audience who asked why tort reform was not included in the health bills, why the bills propose cutting Medicare payments and how the health bill would lower overall health costs.
