The blast was caused by a female suicide bomber, local news agencies reported.

Witnesses said the bus was packed with people at the time of the blast.

“As passengers were getting on and off an explosion occurred outside the vehicle,” the Interfax News Agency quoted an interior ministry press officer as saying.

Emergency services said 28 people were injured and had sought medical help.

North Ossetia lies on Russia’s southern border with Georgia.

It lies close to several regions which have suffered instability in recent years, including Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.
